The activities of the college include Academic Activities

The School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology conducts an undergradualte program, Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) The syllabus and the training pattern of the BASLP course are in accordance with the recommendations of the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi and is approved by the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University. During the four years students are exposed to basic medical science subjects such as anatomy, physiology, otolaryngology and other allied subjects like psychology, statistics and research methodology, etc. along with the core subjects of audiology and speech-language pathology. The University has kept an excellent balance between theoretical and clinical training so as to develop both professional judgment and scientific competence for the trained audiologist and speech language pathologist.

The college has qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members who give theoretical as well as practical training. The theoretical teaching is done using audio-visual aids such as overhead and LCD projectors. The students are encouraged to do reference work. Seminars are conducted in class to improve presentation skills of students. Research is an integral part of training and students are trained and encouraged to conduct research projects under the guidance of the staff.

Guest lectures from experts in the field of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology as well as allied fields are arranged to enrich the knowledge of the staff and students of the college. Workshops/symposia/seminars are conducted to update the knowledge of the staff and students of the college.

For practical orientation and training, students are posted at the various departments of the School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology and Bharati Hospital . The field of speech and hearing is a behavioral science. Students start with clinical observations with staff and internship students. Over the first three years students learn to handle the clients with various speech and language disorders under the supervision of the faculty. So, they get rigorous practical training with hands on experience, which helps them get ready for independent handling of clients in the final internship year. Students also participate in various camps conducted for different populations for identification and management of individuals with speech, language and hearing problems. The BASLP course aims to train the students to be responsible, knowledgeable and sensitive clinicians.

The School of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology conducts an undergraduate (BASLP) and is starting postgraduate program (MASLP) from this academic year, 2010-2011. The courses are recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi. Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (BASLP) is a four year degree course with one year of clinical mastery and Masters in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (MASLP is a full-time two-year course. The syllabus and the training pattern of the courses are in accordance with the recommendations of the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi and are approved by the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University. The Revised syllabus of MASLP is mainly emphasizes on in-depth study of the core areas in the field of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology & the recent advances in the field and allied areas. And the Course has an integrated inter disciplinary content with relevant aspects of Research methodology, statistics, and other allied subjects. During the four years BASLP students are exposed to basic medical science subjects such as anatomy, physiology, otolaryngology and other allied subjects like psychology, statistics and research methodology, etc. along with the core subjects of audiology and speech-language pathology. Clinical Activities

The clinical services of the School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology include prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of the individuals with speech, language and/or hearing problems.

I Audiology

I Audiology

a. Hearing Screening

Hearing screening is carried out for individuals in different age groups ranging from newborn babies to geriatrics. The screening is carried out using behavioral tests, physiological tests (OAE, ABR) or hearing check lists. Neonatal hearing screening is carried out to identify babies who are at risk for hearing loss. Those who fail the screening test are referred for detailed evaluation.

b. Hearing Evaluation

Diagnostic evaluation is carried out using a battery of behavioral and physiological/electrophysiological tests. The tests are chosen based on the age as well as signs and symptoms of the client. Following facilities are available at the college:

Behavioral tests
    • Puretone audiometry,
    • Speech audiometry,
    • Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA)
    • Test battery for differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear pathology including ABLB, TDT, SISI, Glycerol tests, PIPB function
    • Test battery for assessing central auditory processing disorders
    • Test battery for detection of functional hearing loss
Physiological/Electrophysiological tests available
    • Immittance (impedance-admittance) evaluation
    • Auditory evoked potentials including ABR (BERA), MLR, LLR
    • Otoacoustic emissions
    • Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP)
c. Aural Rehabilitation

Aural rehabilitation services include hearing aid selection & fitting, counseling and therapy.

  • Hearing aid fitting: Body level and ear level (Behind-the-ear, in-the-ear, in-the-canal and completely-in-the-canal hearing aids) hearing aids are available for testing. Depending on the choice of the individual, conventional, programmable or digital hearing aids are tried for individuals with hearing loss.
  • Counseling: As fitting hearing aids is not an end in itself, patients are trained/counseled regarding hearing aid care, use and on adjusting to hearing aid. They are also given guidelines for auditory training, speech reading and communication strategies.
  • Therapy: Clients who require auditory learning therapy or training in the use of speech reading or communication strategies are given therapy. The duration of therapy depends on the age of the individual or the quantum of problem faced by the person. For outstation clients, the therapy is demonstrated and the parent/caregiver is trained in doing therapeutic tasks. Home training programs are given to all clients.
d. Specialty Clinic:
  • Cochlear Implant Clinic: Includes facilities for candidacy evaluation, pre- and post-operative counseling, intra-operative neural response telemetry (NRT), post-operative mapping and rehabilitation.

a. Speech and Language Screening

  • Children coming to the Department of Pediatrics- Bharati hospital, both in OPD and in wards are screened for speech-language disorders. Special emphasis is given to those children who have high risk factors.
  • Screening is carried out on a regular basis at the Bharati hospital for adults with acquired speech and language impairments/disorders.
  • Screening of children is done at mainstream schools to identify those with speech-language disorders.

b. Speech and Language Evaluation and Rehabilitation

Speech and language evaluation is carried out for individuals of various age ranges using several of the Western tests with Indian norms, Indian tests, and indigenous tests developed in the School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology itself. Objective evaluation is done using state-of-the-art equipment.

Diagnostic and therapeutic services are offered to the following categories of speech and language impairments/disorders:

  • Disorder of childhood language - These includes disorders in childhood such as specific language impairment (SLI), delayed speech and language (DSL) due to hearing impairment, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism, cleft lip and palate etc. Also therapy is provided for individuals with dyslexia, acquired childhood aphasia, craniofacial anomalies etc
  • Disorders of Adult language - These include acquired language disorders in adults such as aphasia, apraxia of speech, traumatic brain injury, Right Hemisphere Disorder etc.
  • Disorders of Articulation - These include disorders of articulation, due to functional or organic etiology like developmental disorder, tongue tie, cleft lip and /or palate, oral carcinomas dysarthrias etc.
  • Disorders of Fluency - These include disorders such as stuttering, neuro-genic stuttering, Cluttering, stuttering-cluttering and disorders in prosody due to other causes.
  • Disorders of Voice - These include voice disorders such as hoarse voice, high pitched voice, spastic dysphonia, functional aphonia, voice problems observed in professional voice users and laryngectomee etc

c. Specialty Clinics:

  • Specialty Clinic for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) : Activities include assessment for candidacy in AAC, training the disabled individuals and their communication partners in using AAC aids/devices and research in AAC.
  • Specialty Clinic for Cleft Lip and Palate : Diagnosis and rehabilitation of individuals with communication impairment due to craniofacial anomalies like cleft lip and palate is undertaken
  • Voice Clinic : Patients are evaluated with state of art equipments for their pitch, intensity, voice quality etc. Treatment is given for voice problems viz. hoarse voice, breathy voice, hypernasal voice, voice problems in professional voice users etc .

2012-13:

Students of School of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology took part in the different cultural competitions in the “Youth Festival” held from 7th to 9th September 2012 at Bharati Vidyapeeth New law College, Erandwane.

Prizes bagged in Youth Festival of BVDU in 2012-13:
  • Elocution : First Prize: Sakina Ahmednagarwala- FYBASLP. 
  • Debate: Second Prize: Sonakshi Rawal, Sneha Kulkarni : SYMASLP.  
  • Semi classical vocal solo Singing: Rasika Karulkar: SYMASLP. 
  • One act play: Second Prize: Sneha Kulkarni, Sneha Chaudhari, Namrata Gupta, Urvi Mehta, Swati Bhat (SYMASLP),Kaunteya Kathle, Akshay Kamble.(SYBASLP).
 

2014-15:

Around 50 students from Bharati Vidyapeeth School of Audiology and Speech language pathology participated in the Youth festival 2014 held at Bharati Vidyapeeth New law College, Kothrud from the 12th-14th Sep 2104.Students participated in different literary, fine arts, theatre and Cultural competitions. BVDUSASLP students won 4 awards in 4 different categories as follows:

Prizes bagged in Youth Festival of BVDU in 2014-15:
  1. Mr. Sunny Jaiswal won the 2nd prize in Poster making competition.
  2. Mr Akshay kamble won the 2nd prize in Clay modelling competition.
  3. BVDUSASLP group dance participants ( Mr. Hitesh, Mr.Sanket, Mr.Pushkar, Mr.Nikhil, Mr.Naman, Ms.Nilanshu, Ms.Ankita,Ms.Samiksha, Ms.Komal,Ms.Kshipra) won the 1st prize in Group dance competition.
  4. BVDUSASLP won the 2nd prize in overall Championship in the Group dance category.

Students of BVDUSASLP participated in various intercollege sports competitions like Cross Country, Swimming, Chess,Table tennis as follows:

  1. Ms Aaradhana Rai (FYBASLP), Ms.Revita Sarma (FYBASLP), Ms.Shraddha Kolapkar ( SYBASLP) , Ms.Shron Dass Mishra (TYBASLP), Ms.Hemal Shah(FYBASLP), Ms.Nikita (Intern), Ms.Sneha (Intern) participated in Basketball competition on 13/9/2014. Ms.Aaradhan Rai got selected for west zone.
  2. Ms.Aradhana Rai (SYBASLP), Ms.Revita Sarma(FYBASLP), Ms.Akshi Kaul (FYBASLP), Ms.Pooja Bharati (FYBASLP), Ms.Trupti(SYMASLP), Ms.Juilee Naik (SYBASLP) participated in Volley ball competition on 16/9/2014.
  3. Mr.Nikhil Bhagwat(SYBASLP), Mr.Sumit (FYBASLP), Mr.Qumail Shaikh(FYBASLP), Mr.Shlok Srivastva(FYBASLP), Mr.Rohan(FYBASLP), Mr.Mrudul Raut(SYBASLP), Mr.Kaunteya Katle(SYBASLP), Mr.Abhishek (FYBASLP), Ms.Aradhana Rai(SYBASLP), Ms.Suvarna Baxi(FYBASLP), Ms.Revita Sarma(FYBASLP), Ms.Priyanka (FYBASLP), Ms.Trupti Khade(SYMASLP), Ms.Pooja Bharati (FYMASLP), Ms.Sayali, Ms.Aditi, Ms.Rutvika participated in hand ball competition on 22/9/2014. Ms.Aaradhan Rai,Ms.Kanchan Khatri, Ms.Suvarna Baxi,Revita Sarma & Ms.Priyanka got selected for BVDU's Hand ball Team(Female) Mr.Nikhil got selected BVDU's Hand ball Team (Male)

2015-16:

Around 40 students participated in various Dance, Art, literature competitions held during Youth Fest’15 from 11th to 13th Sep, 2015 at Bharathi Vidyapeeth University’s New Law College, Pune. The following students got recognized with awards in different competitions;

  • Ms.Rachel Dsouza (TYBASLP student) got awarded the 1st prize in the Western Solo Singing competition.
  • Ms.Maitreyee kulkarni (TYBASLP student) got awarded the 3rd prize in the light Vocal singing competition.
  • Mr.Sunny jaiswal (Intern) got awarded the 3rd prize in Cartoon making competition.
  • Ms.Aiswarya Malu (TYBASLP student) got awarded the 1st prize in Rangoli Competition.

2016-17:

Around 40 students participated in various Dance, Art, literature competitions held during Youth Fest’16 in Sep, 2016 at Bharathi Vidyapeeth University’s New Law College, Pune. The following students got recognized with awards in different competitions;

  • Ms.Shruti Bhilwadkar (FYBASLP student) got awarded the 2nd prize in the Classical Dance Solo competition.
  • Ms.Aishwarya Malu (Intern) got awarded the 2nd prize in the Rangoli Competition.
  • Ms. Tanaya Chaudhari (FYBASLP student), Mr. Paresh Bhalge (FYBASLP student), Ms. Manasi Sheth (TYBASLP student), Ms.Shruti kumari (FYMASLP student), Ms. Vaishnavi Habade (FYBASLP student), Mr.Hitesh Bhagat (FYMASLP student), Ms. Gauri Deshpande (FYMASLP student), Ms. got awarded the 1st prize in One ACT play competition.
  • Ms.Sucheta Kulkarni (SYMASLP student) got awarded the 1st prize in Clay Modelling Competition.
  • Ms. Komal Jethva ( TYBASLP student), Ms.Kshipra Ketkar (FYMASLP student), Ms. Shruti (FYBASLP student), MS. Rutika Sonawane (TYBASLP student), Ms. Akshee Kaul (TYBASLP student), Ms. Namrata Dhoni (FYMASLP student), Ms. Mudra Dudwadkar (FYBASLP student), MS. Priyanka bakrole (TYBASLP student) won 2nd prize in Folk dance competition.
  • Mr. Abhijeet. R.Bhat ( FYBASLP student), Mr.Prashant P. Nirmal (FYBASLP student), Mr. Kapil Sawant (FYBASLP student), Mr. Qumail Shaikh (SYBASLP student), Mr. Mohd Afzal (FYBASLP student) and Mr. Saneer Khan (SYMASLP student) participated in Men’s Cross Country tournament held at BVDU on 14th September, 2016.
  • Ms. Chaitrali pavnaskar (TYBASLP student), Ms. Palak Julaniya (FYBASLP student), Ms. Aradhana Rai. (Intern ) and Ms. Shital Jambhule (TYBASLP student) participated in Female’s Cross Country tournament held at BVDU on 14th September, 2016.
